It’s wallpaper but not as we know it…

    by  • October 3, 2011 • walls, • Kitchen Surfaces • 0 Comments

Given the chance to redo my kitchen, I’d choose a glass splashback. However, there are plenty of people out there who we know are firmly wedded to tiles. Glass mosaic tiles are the halfway house but generally only come in pre-formed sheets or tiny tiles that are a labour of love to fix.

However, there’s now a third way. Introducing mosaic tile wallpaper by Trend. Suitable for kitchens as it can withstand humidity, it’s comprised of tiny textured tiles with chamfered edges to catch the light and comes with a repeat pattern. Available in rolls, you can even choose to have it pre-grouted, so putting it up should be simple.

At a starting price of £185 per square metre, it’s not a budget buy but you can’t beat it for ‘wow’ factor. For stockists call 01892 509690.

    DIY classes with B&Q

    by  • January 20, 2011 • • Kitchen Design Advice • 0 Comments

This time of year is traditionally the time to start anew and finally tend to the little jobs around the home that you’ve been putting off for months – repainting scratched and scuffed walls, fixing leaking taps or putting up shelves. However, it can be daunting if you have limited knowledge of DIY and simply don’t know how to tackle a job, which is where B&Q aims to help with its You Can Do It classes.

You Can Do It classes in B&Q’s Bolton store

Choose from more than 20 different classes covering plumbing, decorating, eco workshops, joinery and, best of all, refreshing your kitchen. The classes last between two and four hours and will allow you to learn and then practice new skills, so that you have the confidence to use them in your own home.

To book a class, call 0845 600 5428 or visit the website. Simply pay £10 per class when booking and you will receive a £10 B&Q gift card when you attend the class. As a further incentive, you’ll also receive a 10% B&Q discount card at the end of your class to use in store for six months. If more than one class takes your fancy, take advantage of the 3 for 2 offer ,where a third class is free if you book two. For those with children, free classes for the little ones (aged 7-14) are also offered. Classes are currently held in six stores throughout the UK:

    - Gillingham (Kent), Swindon, Meir Park (Stoke-on-Trent), Trafford Park (Greater Manchester), Bolton and Coatbridge (Scotland).

    Happy DIYing! Emily

    Fired Earth tiles

    by  • April 4, 2010 • tiles, • Kitchen Surfaces • 0 Comments

I wouldn’t say I’ve actually got that far with updating my shabbier-than-shabby kitchen, however what I HAVE done is have a good think about what I want, what I don’t want and ignore most of what my other half wants.

Planning my dream kitchen is almost more fun than getting the work underway and I’ve got Beautiful Kitchens cuttings galore. When it comes to the splashback, however, I’m a little undecided. I love glass, but with a Belling range cooker, perhaps tiles would be a better choice. I know that they’re going to need constant cleaning and I know I need to check if they can be used near heat, but I can’t help but be drawn to looks alone.

I’m rather taken with these handmade Chantilly Vivid tiles from Fired Earth, which have a French glaze and come in gorgeously striking colours, such as Turquoise and Rouge. And as for these lovely, rich Aubergine-coloured tiles – sold… to the mad lady with far too many magazine clippings!
